My
Private Nature
Preserves
My Rand St. property is along the tracks by the
Mississippi River, one mile from beautiful historic downtown Cape Girardeau. A small creek runs through it. Several acres are enclosed by a 6 foot chain link fence, including an
acre of man made wetland, which is under water several months in the winter
and
spring. I dubbed this acre a "private nature preserve." Nobody
has bothered it much since the early 70's. I've left it alone
except for clearing a walking trail atop the levee around it. I
intend to make this a haven for Missouri swamp critters and flora.
I've seen groundhogs,
birds, frogs, rabbits, insects, turkeys, and many other critters there.
I've noticed some birds sound different in the city. They
often seem to mimic emergency vehicle sirens.

These guys live here.
The snapper's shell is about 10" long.
Some of the critters in the area are domestic, and very wet.

I own a small
property next to
Interstate 55. Many luxurious houses have been
constructed to the South and west in areas that were once woods. Bent
Creek golf course is to the north.
A large deer track.

Raccoon tracks are all over the place.
